Saturday, November 10, 2007Don't go back to workIf you didn't know, the screenwriters are on strike! I honestly think they shouldn't go back to work. Seriously. Let me put it this way: if Hollywood is fucking you, fuck it back. Don't do something lame like go on strike, just quit. Hollywood is garbage, and I'm sure a lot of writers know it too, a lot of talent is wasted everyday. Shows like Arrested Development get canceled while shit like American Idol and the droves of other garbage is getting more and more attention. I know I'm biased, let me just cut to the point. Quit, just quit. I suggest most writers just quit and get in to a new line of work, you suck. The Tonight Show writers especially. The bulk of you who have talent, find someone who knows how to use a computer, and start something new. Do you have any idea how much money is to be made on the internet? YouTube is a testament that people WILL sit in front of a computer and consume like they do with a television. MC hammer the musical laughing stock raised a million dollars for his new website DANCEJAM, don't you think talented writers could do a little better? If I had a million dollars, I would call Andy Samberg, Steve Carell (along with a few others who write for the Office), Stephen Colbert and Conan O'Brien. Whomever wanted in could be a part of my web 2.0 "television" station. Ok, so the idea isn't perfect, but I think that the smarter writers really need to kick this Hollywood habit, and we can easily crush those studio giants who have a monopoly on mindless entertainment. Comments:
They know very well how much money is to be made off the internet, that's half the fucking reason for the strike. They're pissed off because they're currently getting no money whatsoever for the 'promos' (read: full episodes with paid advertising and therefore revenue) that get shown on network websites. Everybody already knows that watching TV is not limited to conforming to the pre-scheduled parade projected into your living room anymore. In fact the current delivery system is just about relegated to the annals of technological history, right between smoke signals and coffee makers without timers. And if this strike continues for a long time, we won't be getting some creative revolution (because writers have families and got out of university and also Never Never Land a long time ago), we'll be getting Dancing With the Stars and Tila Tequila on every fucking channel and the network websites and the networks will just laugh because they make a lot of money. Thanks for sharing, though.
Ok, you're right, they DO know how much money is to be made, but then why are they trusting companies with execs as stupid and Jeff Zucker?
I'm less saying "Get a YouTube Account", and more saying "We need something new".
I think that's where you get into the problems with unions and the optimistic willingness to work within the system that loyal union workers/grown-ups with families and dreams of retirement often display. At any rate, the WGA are not the ones planning the creative coup d'etat you're dreaming of. Those people are probably already on youtube, and some of them think we should just leave Britney alone (those are not the ones to keep an eye on).
web 2.0 is the future of everything... or at least it should be. the 'best' writers writing for a web 2.0 'television station,' as you put it, would be idyllic... not that i watch teevee anyway, but.... if there were something worth watching.... oh boy!
Pop culture IS important. If no one defends pop culture then it will die, then what? People will still be dying at record numbers, but it will just get lost in literary journals and overly drab newspapers that no one will read.
